Alta Alella, specialists in turning the essence of the terroir into exquisite organic wines and cava.
A winery in harmony with nature: that loves, respects and cares for the native flora and fauna.
Continuing with the launches of the month, today we present you one full of charm. One that took a risk and won.
It is Alta Alella. A Catalan winery that is a benchmark in the production of organic and natural wines and cava with a unique personality.
Their property called Can Genís is located 15 kilometers from Barcelona, in the Alella appellation, the smallest in Spain with 230 hectares and only 7 producers.
Among them is the Pujol-Busquets family, founders of Alta Alella and pioneers in great things. Producers of organic wines and cava since 1991 under two appellations D.O., Cava and Alella.
Keep reading because these wines can be to your customers what honey is to bees.
THE STORY (not the typical one)
Its history begins with an advertisement in a newspaper: “Country estate for sale in Alella”. It was 1991, if it were now, it would surely be on Facebook or any other social media.
Josep Maria Pujol-Busquets, agronomist engineer, oenologist, and good visionary, saw the opportunity to acquire it and that's where it all began.
What was then one hectare, became in less than 20 years, a reference winery in the area with 70 hectares of vineyards.
To achieve a recognized brand, it takes more than just making quality wines. It is necessary to stand out, and to know how to win a community of loyal consumers.
Alta Alella has been able to do so by standing out:
➣ Producing wines and cava certified-organic since 1991. Now there are many, but at that time almost none.
➣ Being the first to produce cava without sulfites in 2006.
➣ Long aging, from 30 months to more than 10 years.
➣ Making natural wines with the minimum intervention.
.
➣ Its Cava from “Paraje Calificado”(Grand Cru single vineyard), which only 6 wineries in Spain produce.
THEIR BRANDS
They have 2 lines; Alta Alella and Celler de les Aus.
Both represent wines and cava that move away from standardization, seeking to reflect the characteristics of the terroir and the vintage so that the palate enjoys the landscape and the moment in each sip.
What you should know about their cava:
➔ They have the “Integral Producer Quality Stamp” from D.O. Cava, which recognizes producers who make 100% of their wines on the property. Both pressing and vinification, which guarantees the traceability of the product.
➔ Long-aged Cava: with a minimum of 30 months aging for the Gran Reserva and more than 10 years for the Colecció range.
➔ All grapes are organic.
➔ They only use vines of traditional local varieties such as Mataró and Pansa Blanca.
➔ All bottles are sold freshly disgorged. .
➔ Considered the best cava in Spain in 2022 and awarded with multiple international awards.
➔ Producers of Cava from “Paraje Calificado”, which means that it meets all the following requirements:
-
- Aged for more than 36 months
- Vineyards over 10 years old
- Maximum yield of 8,000 Kg/Ha
- Manual harvest
- Vinification on the property
- Control of extraction yields limited to 48 Hl/Ha
- Vintage cava only.
- Full traceability from vineyard to commercialization.
Their still wines are not far behind:
For their production, the winery works with micro vinification, diversity of native grapes and produces up to fifty base wines from each vintage.
Celler de les Aus
This other brand, Celler de les Aus, represents the line of natural wines and cava made with minimal intervention and without the use of sulfur.
A clear example of “less is more”.
The names of their wines and cava are a tribute to those who create the soundtrack of their vineyards, the birds.
